Quick update today as it's Thanksgiving and the boyfriend is still asleep.

I didn't officially sign up for NaNoWriMo with a simpler goal of completing my gifts for a fanfic exchange. Have I started? No. But there's still a week left and the fics aren't due until the end of January.

What I have done, however, is write almost-on-track for NaNo number of words of a new project. It's a dark fantasy that takes place in a secondary world heavily inspired by late-stage Imperial Russia and Fire Emblem: Three Houses with vampires and queer people. I'm having a bunch of fun with it. I've code-named it AquaShame in a bunch of places so that's the term to check out if you're interested in the aesthetics and snippets
Brown text on a white background overlaying a warm-toned tavern interior: “There’s something on your mind, Ogrodnik. Do you mind sharing it with me? I won’t tell the other Chosen.”She looks into Captain Teodora’s soft, brown eyes. “Is that a promise?”“More professional discretion if it’s anything. I’ll decide that when you tell me.”White text on the bottom: @joeatsfod Iwona #AquaShame

I'm almost done with all my blog-related ARC reading for the year, and I'm excited to jump into the toppling TBR of craft reading and neglected pre-orders.
Until next time,
Jo

I'll actually commit to posting here weekly on Thursdays so people know what's up with me outside the main blog which is for reviews and writing updates <3

Oh jeez, it's been a month. Let's ignore that heh. I got the greatest advice from a reader (hi Kat!) and it's thing:
  • When writing multiple POVs, make sure each chapter has one of each
It has been such a boon to this revision. The tension is tighter, I have more room to describe things because I'm not worried about repetition. The freedom is incredible.

Reading the original rewrite MS, however, I do feel a small pang of disappointment. It's a writing flow issue I thought I had ironed out, but it takes more effort to do so than originally anticipated.

So, one of the things of an ADHD is the intense difficulty to talk about things linearly. There are many paths getting from point A to point B (i.e., taking detours at point F, and point M, circling back to point D, and so one). These require much revision or thinking to get there. And when it comes to long form, you want to keep concepts together.

For a visual, please see this tweet.

In this segment I just worked through, it was an exercise is trying to keep the focus of each paragraph. It's embarrassing that people beta read it, and I should have caught it sooner.

But that's what revision is for.

Decided to be putting up writing updates here, actually. But less in a "I've got something to announce" way, and more in a "here's how writing went."

The book I am working on is called Thieves of Paradise, and it's about a dancer who wants a second chance at finding herself, a thief who wants safety and security away from thievery, and a cyborg who wants to know why his golden heart doesn't beat in a world of magic-tech under a dome. It's been quite a journey, and I am currently revising my third from-scratch rewrite.

It's funny how I've been working on this story since 2017, when I wrote the first synopsis after a V.E. Schwab event when A Conjuring of Light first came out. Since then, it's been rewrites, but it wasn't until 2020/2021 that I really learned to revise a project. It's been a long journey and several heartaches, but I think I'm in the final stretch.

Finally.

I started on the first part of the book last night. It's divided into three, so the introduction is first. There's a lot of truth to "you have to tell yourself the story first until you can tell a reader." I've been working at this for so long, and I'm still uncovering threads and connections. You'd think I've seen it all at this point, but the surprises are quite lovely.

Hello!

Since I'm starting up here, I wanted to take some time to outline how this might be different from my main blog, Jo Writes Fantasy. I'll be using that platform mostly for book reviews, author reviews, and writing updates. Here, it'll be a bit more random, like the one show a week that I watch and whatnot. Or music that is rocking my

Now, how will this be different from my newsletter? There won't be a collection of links to blog posts. That's what the blog and the newsletter are for.

For other links of where to follow, please click on my carrd (link). Twitch is a Friday/Saturday stream of, currently, the Witcher 1.

For the actual about me, I'm Jo, I live in College Station, Texas. My pronouns are they/them. I write, read, and do a whole bunch of other things that would take too long to itemize. I'm very hype and try not to be down most of the time.
